01 How much does a shed slab cost in Hamilton?

Shed slabs are usually priced between $110 and $170 per square metre, though small slabs cost more per metre because delivery minimums and crew setup are the same whatever the size. A typical 3 by 6 metre shed slab therefore often comes in as a single job price rather than a rate. Access for the truck, how much digging is needed and any drainage work are the main variables.

02 How thick should a shed slab be?

For a standard garden shed holding tools and a mower, 100mm over a compacted basecourse with steel mesh is plenty. If the shed will house a vehicle, a boat, a workshop with heavy machinery, or a hoist, we increase that to 125mm or more and add heavier reinforcing plus thickened edges. Tell us what is going in the shed and we will specify accordingly.

03 Does the slab need to be bigger than the shed?

Usually yes, by around 50 to 100mm on each side, so the shed sits fully on concrete and its walls are not overhanging an edge. That extra margin also gives you a small apron to fix the shed down to and keeps water from running straight into the base of the walls. We will confirm the exact dimensions against your shed kit before setting the boxing.

04 Do I need consent for a shed slab?

Small sheds under 10 square metres generally do not require building consent, but larger sheds, anything with plumbing, and anything close to a boundary often do. Because the thresholds depend on size, height, use and location on the section, we check the specifics at quote stage. If consent is needed we can work to the consented engineering and coordinate with the inspections.

05 How long does a shed slab take?

Most shed slabs are completed in two to three days on site: excavation and cartage, then base preparation and boxing, then the pour and finish. You can walk on it the following day. We recommend waiting seven days before erecting the shed and fixing it down, and the full 28 days before parking a vehicle or moving heavy machinery onto it.
